In response to the massive earthquake in Haiti on January 12, Boca Comm Global Philanthropy has created the Haiti Relief Fund to support its network of grantees as they address the urgent needs of the affected population.
The 2010 earthquake is only the latest catastrophe to strike Haiti. Decades of deforestation left the Carribbean island defenceless against 2008's catastrophic hurricanes. In one season, hurricanes Fay, Gustav, Hanna and Ike inflicted damages of US $1 billion to the impoverished country. The flood waters from the hills washes cows out to sea and spits up boulders as if they are corks.

The iconic National Palace lays in ruin after the earthquake. Although the President René Préval survived, the government ministers and officials have been depleted by death and injury.

A constellation of factors – crushing poverty and environmental degradation, political instability and bad governance, ill-conceived international aid efforts and sheer geographical bad luck – have crippled Haiti's ability to withstand and recover from tropical storms and other natural disastes. "Haiti is a mosaic of vulnerabilities," said Ronald Joseph Toussaint, the Haitian environment ministry official.

With a per capita income of $3.60 per day, Haiti is the most impoverished country in the Western Hemisphere. Thus, its population is especially vulnerable to natural disasters, such as the 2010 earthquake.
